Dr. Michalis Setatos, an eminent Greek linguist, Professor Emeritus at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Modern Greek Studies for 44 years, was an outstanding scholar and a unique linguist (he mastered a large number of ancient, medieval and modern languages) of profound erudition. His long selfless contribution to the development of almost every branch of linguistics in Greece, particularly at the Aristotle University, and to the scientific training of numerous able students is such that he can justifiably be considered the founder of modern linguistics in our country.
Michalis Setatos was also a staunch demoticist, who embraced the visions of Manolis Triandaphyllidis and served his Foundation in the capacity of President, Vice-president or Member of the Board of Directors for 44 years. The culmination of his contribution came when his disposition was made, whereby he bequeaths his movable and immovable property to the Institute.
This website, which hosts all of his published works (gradually incorporating, following appropriate editing, the numerous unpublished texts found after his passing), is the Foundation’s smallest tribute to his memory.
